There is a meal that almost no one talks about

Sitting alone, in a place you don’t know, to eat.

No conversation to keep up.
No role to play.
Just you, a table, and a place that knows nothing about you.

A moment without an audience

At home, eating alone goes unnoticed.

While travelling, that same gesture becomes visible: to your own eyes, before anyone else’s.

You watch yourself.
You watch the place.
You notice what it feels like to be no one but yourself, with no witness to confirm it.

What silence allows

With no exchange to maintain, something loosens.

– the gaze lingers longer
– sounds become audible
– thoughts, finally, slow down

That silence is not emptiness. It’s a space that clears itself.

The discomfort, then something else

The first times, a discomfort sets in: the feeling of appearing alone, as if it were a lack.

Then, often, it dissolves.

What remains resembles a simple form of freedom: answering to no one, not even yourself.

What this moment reveals

A meal eaten alone, far from home, says something about how you inhabit your own presence.

Some avoid it.
Others end up seeking it out.

Maybe it’s there, at an unfamiliar table, that the journey truly begins to belong to you.
